Today the Senate will vote on proposals to protect Dreamers. This is the moment to shape how Congress solves the crisis Trump created when he ended DACA.
Right now, many Republicans are demanding a white supremacist wishlist: an end to family immigration, an end to the diversity visa program, billions of dollars for “the wall,” and an even larger deportation force.
Your Senators need to hear from you (right now!) before they vote. Tell them that American Jews demand a Dream Act as the base of any proposal that passes the Senate and reject cruel policies that go against American and Jewish values. Can you take two minutes to make a call?
Call 478-488-8059 and tell your Senator: As a constituent and as a Jew I urge you to reject any legislation that doesn’t provide permanent protections for Dreamers or that would hurt immigrant communities.
One thing you can do when you call is share the story of a Dreamer. There’s a website I love — DreamerStories.com. It has beautiful portraits of young immigrants, and describes their courageous journeys as undocumented Americans who love their families, community, and country.
It also asks Dreamers “What is your dream?” Here is how some of them answered —
Laura says: I’ve lived in this country for 17 years, and I dream it will soon realize that people like my family and I, undocumented immigrants, who come from different backgrounds with diverse cultures, have so much to offer this nation.
Ciriac says: As an immigrant rights activist, writer, poet, and scholar I hope to pursue a career in public policy or law to bridge the disparities in the communities I am a part of.
Adie says: I dream of the time when we see people beyond their immigration status. That being an American is more than your proof of citizenship. That the meaning of patriotism is defined by your embracement of the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
When you call your Senator, tell them you are proud to support Dreamers like Laura, Ciriac, and Adie who love their families, community, and country.
