As Jews we know that none of us got where we are on our own. American Jews achieved upward mobility, not only through their own hard work, but also because they had access to things like affordable housing, public education, and a safety net that includes the most highly successful anti-poverty programs the world has ever seen – Social Security, unemployment insurance and Medicare. The values that created those opportunities, and that allowed so many Jews to move – in a single generation – from poverty into the middle class, are under a sustained attack. I believe that promoting more civic engagement and support for democratic values are an important part of being Jewish. Bend the Arc is inserting those values into America’s public life in a visibly Jewish way – that’s why I am a strong supporter.
