Bend the Arc together with the Los Angeles College Faculty Guild (AFT 1521) is joining forces to show support for Proposition 30, a desperately-needed measure that will stave off further cuts to education, public safety, and social services budgets. Speakers at a rally and press conference will be punctuated by shofar blowers who will sound “a clarion call for justice.”
Spearheading the rally and press conference will be Joshua Pechthalt, president of the California Federation of Teachers; Scott Svonkin, a member of the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees; Joanne Waddell, president of AFT 1521; and Sarah Hronsky, senior rabbi at Temple Beth Hillel in nearby Valley Village.
Los Angeles Valley College, part of the nine-campus L.A. Community College District (LACCD), has already suffered severe cutbacks and will need to make another $31 million in reductions should Proposition 30 fail to pass. Without Prop. 30, our schools and colleges face $6 billion in devastating cuts this year. Students will be turned away from classes. The measure would raise the state income tax on those earning more than $250,000 a year for seven years and increase the sales tax by a quarter of a cent.
Directions and parking: Enter the LAVC campus at the eastside of Fulton at the intersection of Hatteras. Go around the traffic circle, and head north. Parking will be available along College Road North.
