Domestic Workers RallyThanks to your support, we are keeping our promise to continue the fight for a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights after last year’s veto by Governor Brown, Bend the Arc Southern California has launched into full campaign mode again to build support for the new 2013 California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (AB 241).

On March 7 we stood shoulder to shoulder with domestic workers at the State Office Building in downtown Los Angeles to show support for the bill, which would ensure that domestic workers receive overtime pay, meal and rest breaks, three paid sick days, workers compensation, the right to use kitchen facilities to prepare their own food and – for those who live with their employers – time off for sleep. According to a study undertaken by the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the University of Illinois, about 67 percent of live-in workers are paid below the state minimum wage, and the median hourly wage of these workers is just $6.15.

We are continuing to keep up the pressure to pass AB 241 through weekly “Action Thursdays,” where we mobilize hundreds of Californians to call their state representatives, take online actions and make legislative visits to advocate for the bill.
