Home care is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. But without offering basic labor protections, these jobs won't attract the workforce required to care for aging Americans who want to remain at home, rather than be institutionalized.
Since Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938 to ensure workers a minimum wage, home care workers have been denied these protections. Last December President Obama proposed a rule to change this, and Bend the Arc helped generate thousands of public comments in support. Yet, despite overwhelming public support, legislation to kill the proposal has been introduced in Congress. During Rosh Hashanah we visited key Senators to blow the shofar for justice and deliver hundreds of public comments from their constituents in support of these workers.
