Bend the Arc and Colleagues Urge DHS to Update Asylum Forms to be More LGBT Inclusive

Today, Bend the Arc joined group comments organized by the Center for American Progress on the Department of Homeland Security Citizenship and Immigration Service’s I-589 Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal form. The comments suggest changes that will make the form more inclusive of LGBT asylum seekers as well as improved data collection.

Bend the Arc Joins Legal Brief Defending Fair Housing Act in Supreme Court Case

Today, Bend the Arc joined an amicus brief in a case that will be heard by the Supreme Court of the United States regarding the Fair Housing Act, Texas Department of Housing and Consumer Affairs v. The Inclusive Communities Project (ICP). The brief was organized by the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. At issue in this case is whether language in the Fair Housing Act allows for disparate impact claims (allegations that a law or practice has a discriminatory effect). The brief provides evidence of residential segregation and its harms, and argues that disparate impact claims are a fundamental tool in making progress toward integration.

Bend the Arc and Colleagues Urge Sec. Burwell to Grant DACA & DAPA Recipients Access to Health Care

Update

Today, Bend the Arc joined colleagues from more than 130 national and local organizations in writing to Health and Human Services Secretary Burwell in support of granting health coverage for immigrants. The letter urges HHS to use its authority to allow individuals granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to participate in affordable health coverage options under the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The letter also urges HHS to not replicate barriers to health coverage that currently exist for DACA recipients for recipients of Deferred Action for Parental Accountability.
