New York – In response to President Donald Trump's announcement of Neil Gorsuch as his pick for the vacant Supreme Court seat, Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block, Director of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, released the following statement:

“With President Trump’s onslaught of discriminatory executive orders this past week, a Supreme Court capable of serving as a check on the executive branch and committed to protecting the Constitutional rights and freedoms of all Americans has never been more crucial.

“We are deeply concerned that the record of Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s nominee, does not indicate a willingness to protect these basic freedoms. Throughout his judicial career, he has demonstrated hostility toward victims of police brutality and toward women’s right to access reproductive health care. His history of anti-worker rulings and his decisions against attempts to protect the environment are also profoundly troubling and raise serious questions about his ability to rule fairly on our highest Court. All of these positions contradict both fundamental American and Jewish values.

“In light of the Republican leadership’s refusal to even hold hearings on Merrick Garland’s nomination, as well as President Trump’s lack of a mandate and the disrespect that he’s already shown for the Constitution, the new justice must be a nominee who can be supported by members of both parties. The Senate must thoroughly examine Judge Gorsuch’s record. Assuming he continues to express attitudes consistent with the views he has held over the course of his career, we will vigorously oppose his confirmation and urge all Senators to do the same.”
