New York – Following the release of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) report that the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) passed by the House of Representatives would cause 23 million Americans to lose their health insurance by 2026,Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, released the following statement:

"The report released today by the CBO further validates what we already knew: House Republicans do not believe that all Americans have the right to affordable and accessible health care.  The American Health Care Act’s harsh provisions, including its attacks on Medicaid, which 70 million Americans rely on, and its loosening of regulations on standards for insurance coverage, would result in untold suffering and hardship for our society’s most vulnerable members, including the disabled, the elderly, young children and those living in poverty.

“For years, the Republican Party wasted time on symbolic votes to repeal Obamacare, while failing to put together an actual plan to deal with America’s remaining health care challenges. When they were finally forced to act, the best they could come up with was a law that would take away coverage for 23 million Americans, and cause others to see their premiums rise by as much as 850 percent.

“Simply put, the bill is a huge tax cut for the rich disguised as a health care bill and represents an assault on core Jewish values of caring for the sick and valuing human life. The Senate must reject the House-passed legislation and instead work in a bipartisan fashion to make our health care system stronger, more compassionate and more effective for all Americans.”
