The Bend the Arc family of organizations consists of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, our 501(c)(4) organizing and advocacy arm; Bend the Arc Jewish Action PAC, a political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates for federal office who champion our values; and Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, our 501(c)(3) education and leadership arm. Headquartered in New York City, we have offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Oakland, with volunteer-led local groups organizing nationwide.

About the Position:

Bend the Arc is moving into 2019 with a dedicated plan to meet the current moment through effective and strategic campaigning. We plan to leverage the full depth and breadth of our organization to execute high-impact campaigns that are responsive to the current atrocities from the Trump Administration but also sow the seeds for the multi-racial, inclusive democracy we want for the future.

We know that the demands on our time, capacity and resources during the next two years of the Trump presidency will be unrelenting. We will build on our advocacy and organizing work with other communities targeted by the growing white nationalist movement, but with a focus on campaigns that are responsive to policy developments, abuses, and atrocities from the current administration. Bend the Arc’s unique role in addressing the most significant threats to our society and democracy at this moment — white nationalism and the anti-semitism and anti-black racism that make up its foundation — demands that we lead boldly and visibly, in the Jewish community, the wider progressive movement and the American political and social conversation. This position has been created to sit at the nexus of this campaigning work.

Bend the Arc is seeking a Complex Campaigns Manager (CCM) to support these efforts with strong, multi-faceted campaigns. The CCM will own the campaign process and drive all national campaigns (i.e., campaigns that include our distributed field, communications and advocacy teams that comprise our Impact Team). The CCM will lead and coordinate campaign planning, develop campaign plans, trouble-shoot real time campaign shifts and needs, monitor all national campaigns, and ensure all campaigns are meeting goals and are executed with excellence. The CCM will succeed in that body of work through working collaboratively across teams, successfully managing in multiple directions, and responding deftly to opportunities as they arise.

The CCM will report to the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and will not have direct reports.

Here’s what you’d do in the job:

  • In close partnership with CSO, craft high-impact campaigns that advance our two-year priorities, respond to urgent developments in the political environment and reflect a racial equity analysis at each step.
  • Manage varying and potentially multiple campaign teams comprised of staff from across the Bend the Arc Impact Team.
  • Work closely with departments to develop goal-oriented campaign plans, timelines and MOCHAs for campaign teams and work streams.
  • Coordinate planning and management of campaigns of varying lengths and types, including episodic mini-campaigns, short-term campaigns, as well as longer-term pro-active campaigns.
  • Monitor and report on campaign progress, managing campaign arcs and escalation for maximum impact.
  • Ensure opportunities for robust engagement of all Bend the Arc departments (communications; advocacy; electoral; field; development) and Bend the Arc field units in campaign efforts.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with campaign staff of partner and movement organizations.
  • During moments of rapid response, work closely with CSO to determine if/how such actions may alter or strengthen existing campaigns, or evolve into campaigns themselves.
  • Assist with the creation of resources for field units and affiliates, and external partners to amplify national campaigns as needed.
  • Build relationships and strengthen partnerships with ally organizations, affiliates, and community members.
  • Work with vendors, consultants and contractors if and as needed.

You could be great for this job if you have:

  • A minimum of five years of experience running successful issue, advocacy, political or corporate campaigns.
  • Project management experience, and the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of principles of effective campaigning, including within a distributed model of related field units.
  • Experience using a racial equity lens in planning and/or analysis, and have undergone strong racial equity training.
  • Solid communication skills with experience writing clear, explanatory content, and communicating clearly--verbally and electronically--with attention to detail.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships, especially with campaign staff at partner organizations.
  • Experience managing diverse teams (the Bend the Arc team is diverse in a number of ways, including geography, race + ethnicity, tenure, Jewish experience, management level and expertise).
  • Creativity, flexibility and comfort working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google platforms (Gmail, Calendar, Drive)
  • Commitment to social justice, to the values and goals of Bend the Arc, and to working at a values-based organization with a high emphasis on mutual respect and intentional workplace culture.

Although not required, a strong candidate may have some of the following:

  • Experience with distributed organizing tools.
  • A record of building effective partnerships or coalitions with advocacy and/or activist groups.
  • An understanding of the current policy and political landscape at both the national and state and local level sites of Bend the Arc field units.
  • Familiarity with Management Center tools such as MOCHA and delegation worksheets.
  • Active involvement in movements that work to support racial justice (including fighting white nationalism and anti-semitism), immigrant rights and/or protecting our democracy.

Compensation and Hours:

This is a full-time position, with occasional evening or weekend work based on need. The annual salary range is $70,000-$80,000 DOE, and includes paid time off and health benefits.
