Qualified immunity is a rule that protects state and local officials, including police officers, from facing consequences when they violate our rights. It allows police brutality to continue unchecked and denies victims their constitutional and civil rights. It’s created a culture of fear that enables law enforcement officers to use excessive force, violate civil rights, and kill people with zero accountability.
