Dear Legislators: The COVID-19 crisis exposed a problem that has plagued Florida for decades — our woefully inadequate unemployment system. Take action now to reform reemployment assistance.

When it comes to reemployment assistance, Florida is stuck in 1998.

That was the year our state legislature capped weekly unemployment benefits at $275. Our country has changed significantly in the last 23 years, including changes to the minimum wage, the cost of groceries, gas, a doctor’s visit, and a college education.

With the Covid-19 crisis causing numerous Florida businesses to close, many Floridians have found themselves out of work and struggling to make ends meet.

Yet, in spite of this public health emergency and the resulting job losses, reemployment assistance is NOT a top priority for every Florida legislator. This is unacceptable.

Jewish tradition charges us with the responsibility to create a just society where all of us can live in dignity. This responsibility leads us to support and actively advocate for employment programs.

Currently, there are several reemployment assistance bills being introduced in the Florida legislature designed to increase the weekly benefit amount, lengthen the duration of benefits, and expand eligibility for assistance. However, at this point, none of the proposed bills has been brought up for a vote on the House or Senate floor.
