Description
Let’s be a light for those inside Adelanto.
On Sunday, December 9th, 5:30 PM, a group of interfaith clergy and people of faith will gather in Adelanto, California, across from a private immigrant detention facility owned and run by GEO Group, to shine the light on conditions there. A recent report detailed a slew of abuses, ranging from nooses hanging from detainees’ cells to medical neglect and unjust segregation. Guided by the values of our collective faiths, we will shine our light on the humanity of those detained, most of whom are people from Central America simply seeking asylum and a better life in the US. We will amplify the call to end the abuses in the prison. And we will come together to demand an end to the criminalization of our immigrant friends and neighbors.
We have specifically chosen the night of December 9th because it is during the middle of the Jewish holiday of Chanukah - the Jewish festival that celebrates freedom of religion and freedom from tyranny. In the spirit of our interfaith community, we will also be marking the tradition of Las Posadas; a Christian ritual prominent in the Latina/o immigrant community that re-enacts the journey of Joseph and Mary and celebrates safety, refuge and community in times of hardship.
Please join our call for all families to have the freedom to be together for the holidays.
