As we prepare for the season of Passover, we are reflecting on what liberation means in the context of elections. We are months away from one of the most critical elections in American history, and to us, liberation means that each of us has the ability to raise our voice through our vote. Yet we know there are increasing efforts to erode voting rights and make it even more challenging for certain voters, specifically people of color and those in poor communities, to participate in this critical process of democracy.
That is why we are launching our chapter’s 2024 election work with a postcard party! We are partnering once again with Reclaim Our Vote (ROV), a grassroots campaign to reach BIPOC voters and push against voter disenfranchisement in Southern and swing states. Reclaim Our Vote has a proven track record of impacting elections. In 2021, their postcard campaign increased Black voter turnout by 3%, and in 2020, they sent over 143,000 postcards to purged voters in the Georgia primaries, resulting in 3.3% of them registering to vote. ROV has also found that 80% of voters who vote in primaries will vote in general elections.
Join our 2024 kickoff postcard party where we will begin writing to 1000 voters in Virginia ahead of the primary elections. We will provide registration info and identify voting rights, reproductive rights, and the preservation of Social Security and Medicare as key issues.
We all have a stake in what happens to our democracy, but there can be no true liberation while some of us are discouraged or kept from voting. Black folks, other people of color and voters in poor communities are increasingly met with barriers to voting. That is why we are partnering with Reclaim Our Vote to reach these voters and ensure they have the information they need to participate in the elections.
