In California, when immigrants and refugees have completed their sentences in state prisons and local jails, law enforcement voluntarily transfers them to ICE custody for detention and deportation — disproportionately impacting Black, Latinx, and AAPI immigrant communities.
But we have the opportunity to change that: the VISION Act (AB 937) just passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee and is headed to a floor vote. This bill would stop transfers to ICE and instead allow our immigrant neighbors to return home to their families and communities.
