Jews say:
Trump's budget bill
is a shanda, disgrace.
Share how Trump's budget impacts you and the people you love
In Jewish tradition, we make space for grief — when our hearts are broken, our community comes together. Sharing our grief and our stories is also a powerful part of organizing. As Jews who dream of a country where all are safe and supported, Trump's budget bill is a nightmare that takes money from working Americans to build an army of ICE agents and give tax cuts to the richest. To publicly mourn and to fuel our fight for our futures, we're collecting Jewish stories of how Trump's budget bill will impact Jews and our loved ones.
I teach in a Latino community where people wake up every day, wondering what the day will bring. How can children bring their best selves to school when they don't know what will happen to their loved ones? Children brought up in this environment will likely develop PTSD, as have children raised in war zones and refugee camps. And what about adults who were granted legal status, only to have it revoked now? They had hopes and dreams destroyed with the single stroke of the pen. My family came, over 100 years ago, to build a better life for their children and for me, their grandchild. Why deny that to others? Have we not learned anything?

I only have one wage coming in via my husband, and our only health insurance we can afford is Tricare Prime RET through my husband's 22 year USAF military service. The unmet need is already at crisis point in America and very much in my area of Virginia. It will get worse. And if we lose democracy we lose much more than just money and social security. We lose humanity and everything America once stood and fought for. The working class families. This isn't a land of the free anymore and being brave is no longer enough to survive. I live in fear of what comes next. What do I do to survive if my husband loses his government job? Who will help us then?

My family includes myself and my two children and all of us will be effected in totally different ways. My son may have his college loans called in, which he couldn't pay. My daughter's Medicaid and food stamps would be taken away. She gets these because of her disability. She could also lose her job because of the funding for libraries, she's a library assistant. She may also lose her pell grant or tuition fee college. Me, I would lose my food stamps, Medicaid, and have to pay for my insurance and social security changes. All in all, it ends up being a toss up between getting by, replacing a 27 year old car, and making much needed repairs to my home.

I'm a small business owner who works with academics. I depend on the ACA for my health insurance, and am now making plans for having no useful insurance next year, as the premiums for my current plan will go up $2500 for the year. And at a time when the Trump administration is destroying the research capacity of universities, which is the basis for my income. This fall I am launching new services I spent a year developing, but universities can't prioritize faculty development. I have already lost two clients (20% of my income) to this administrations treatment of scholarship and grant funding, and I expect next year to be one of great hardship.

Few realize that 35% of those on Medicaid are seniors in nursing homes. Where are they to go with all the cuts in Medicaid? How can they meet the new work requirement? How can other seniors get work with so much age discrimination in the hiring market? Cuts in social security? Few can live on what they earn now. Is there a cut off at what point millionaires and billionaires do NOT get to draw social security? How much will social security not have as a result of a lower cut off for which they do not need to pay into the system? Economics research proved years ago that money does not trickle down from the rich to the middle and lower socioeconomic groups.

I am a retired teacher living in Northern CA (Bay Area), one of the most expensive parts of the US. This budget bill is a complete shanda, a disgrace for all of the electeds who voted for it. I am concerned about the future of Social Security, as I depend on those monthly checks to make ends meet. I worry deeply for neighbors whose income is more precarious than mine, neighbors who are not citizens and can't work because they fear deportation. What kind of world will we leave to our younger family members, friends and neighbors? At least I am proud to tell my four grandchildren that I am fighting back.

The ugly immoral Budget is fueling a deportation machine and inhumane systems of imprisonment costing us billions of dollars, to capture innocent, law abiding, hard working immigrants. They help take care of American families working in the food and hospitality sectors, on our farms, in our health care system, which is also being crippled by cuts to Medicaid. A beloved member of the neighboring Port Washington community has been cruelly abducted from outside his workplace, and deported to NJ far from his wife & child. Mr. Mejia has been living here over a decade, and is praised by his boss, friends, and neighbors for being a wonderful and kind guy.

My sister-in-law's grandchild has numerous special needs. Many of the services she needs are through Medicaid. I don't know how she and parents will manage without these services. I'm connected to the Adult Education community and I've heard that the Administration is trying to claw back Adult Education funds. This is one of the most cost-effective programs one could hope for. Basic 3R skill, workforce-readiness, English Language Acquisition - all Adult Ed programs that benefit the community and businesses. The cruelty of this administration is too numerous and heinous.

My story is brief as I am 90 yrs old. I am the father of 2 wonderful sons , 4 beautiful grandchildren and a dwindling number of relatives. My life has been blessed by good parents, siblings and God who always was at my side, deserved or not. I grieve now for the family I will soon leave behind. They will deal with the fallout of Trump's budget bill. I pray that they will be spared much hurt and suffering. I pray God will help comfort all who will be maltreated by this bill that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. Please God watch over all Americans and our United States.

As a cancer patient, Trump's budget bill not only affects my treatment and possible future treatment, but the treatment of others, including children affected by cancer. As a teacher of children of special needs, this bill will directly impact my families and the benefits they receive to help them access occupational therapists, ABA professionals, and specialized care and equipment. It impacts access to SNAP benefits, when time and resources are already strained for these families. Lastly, it separates families that came here to find a better way of life. He's rounding up hard working people and it's tearing apart the fabric of diversity that we celebrate.

As an educator, this will impact the students I teach on a daily basis as they won't be nutritionally prepared for the school setting.

Deporting the wrong people does not make us safer. As a trial attorney for ICE for many years, that was my philosophy. The agency wasn't perfect, but we tried our best to follow the law and do the right thing. We were as humane as we could be, given the huge caseloads and inadequate resources. I don't even recognize the ruthless and heartless agency it has become. ICE has now even become an instrument of repression using antisemitism as a pretext. That means real antisemitism may be overlooked. It also means Jews will be further stigmatized. Anything we can do to stop this weaponization of our Jewish identities we must do.

I am a social worker in an adult medical daycare program in New Jersey. I serve approximately 60 clients, all of whom are elderly Medicaid beneficiaries and many of whom are SNAP (Food Stamps) recipients. For any of these people, losing Medicaid coverage or/and SNAP benefits would be calamitous. Moreover, if a sizeable portion of this group loses their Medicaid, which covers the operational costs of the program, the entire program could collapse. And, incidentally, in the event of that outcome, i would be out of a job.

I feel like last weeks garbage. I imagine the few clinics we have here in rural NM will close when Medicare stops. I already have a bad time even getting a doctors appointment now. The cuts in food subsidies will affect my friends from the food bank. It hurts to think about it. ICEstapo should be marching down the street any day now. I'm not looking forward to that.

I have a dear friend in Arizona who has been diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder. He cannot hold a job right now and is currently homeless. He relies on Medicaid in the form of Arizona AHCCCS. Because he cannot hold a job, he will lose his Medicaid and any chance he has of coming out of this dark chapter in his life. He is 61 today, a PhD, a therapist, a college professor - but mental illness has robbed him of all of that. If it can happen to him, it can happen to any of us. I am terrified for him and for his future.

I'm a low income senior citizen on Medicare, Medicaid and SNAP. Do I need to say anymore? My life will be upended. I also live in HUD subsidized housing. Still, I seem to be more concerned about the people being kidnapped off our streets and disappeared, including citizens and immigrants seeking documentation via legal channels. The new spending bill increases ICE's budget by many fold. Living in a police state is not my experience, for the most part, over my 69 years in the US.

Livid and heartbroken. This is a dark, dark moment for our country, and for each and every member of Congress who voted for this bill. Shame on you for claiming to care about the basic needs of your constituents one moment just to throw them overboard the next. History will remember this moment accordingly. In the weeks and months ahead, we will do all we can to mitigate the devastating impact of this bill.

If budgets are moral documents, this is the least moral document I’ve seen in my lifetime. So many people will struggle because of this bill. People will die because of this bill. The ground from which we organize will change dramatically, with more obstacles — and more opportunities. We will continue to take action loudly, in the streets and through the halls of power, to make clear that leaders who put profits over people and who choose white supremacy will soon find themselves out of all jobs.
