Deporting the wrong people does not make us safer. As a trial attorney for ICE for many years, that was my philosophy. The agency wasn't perfect, but we tried our best to follow the law and do the right thing. We were as humane as we could be, given the huge caseloads and inadequate resources. I don't even recognize the ruthless and heartless agency it has become. ICE has now even become an instrument of repression using antisemitism as a pretext. That means real antisemitism may be overlooked. It also means Jews will be further stigmatized. Anything we can do to stop this weaponization of our Jewish identities we must do.
