AB2664 just passed the state legislature, and if signed into law by Governor Newsom, would criminalize peaceful protest in California. It would make it a crime — punishable by up to $5,000 in fines and a year in jail — to hand someone a flyer or have a sign within 100 feet of any place of worship.
Think about largely populated cities where there are many places of worship on a single block. This bill would severely restrict our ability to legally protest publicly. Our opposition claims that this bill is about fighting antisemitism, but the impact is that this bill, if passed, would restrict our First Amendment rights. Our democracy is under attack, and we need lawmakers focused on bills that strengthen our right to protest, not weaken it.
Suppressing constitutional rights in the false name of Jewish safety doesn't protect us. It actually risks fueling the very antisemitism it claims to fight. It's on us to let our legislators know that AB2664 will make Jewish Californians — and all Californians — less safe.
