The Ohio legislature is rushing to pass Ohio HB 486, the Charlie Kirk American Heritage Act, a bill that undermines the separation of church and state. They amended the bill to include the Islamaphobic dogwhistle “Judeo-Christian values." But we know that this amendment isn’t about including Jews — it’s about using us to forward a Christian nationalist agenda.
HB 486 would let public schools promote the “positive influence of Christianity” on the U.S., pushing a whitewashed version of history and implying that America is a Christian country. Jewish tradition teaches that faith must be a matter of Bechirah Chofshit, free choice. This bill is an attempt to use Jews to and undermine our multicultural and multi-faith democracy.
