Bend the Arc applauds House impeachment vote
”Every Republican responsible for fomenting these attacks must be removed or resign, from the president on down”

WASHINGTON – Bend the Arc: Jewish Action released the following statement on Wednesday in response to Donald Trump becoming the first president to be impeached twice:

“Today’s vote was a much-needed step toward holding Trump and his GOP enablers accountable for inciting violence and undermining our democracy in the president’s desperate attempt to hold onto power he clearly does not respect,” said Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action. “We have been ringing the alarm bell for years about Trump’s incitement of violence, undermining of democratic norms, unwillingness to accept the results of elections, and manufacturing of lies and bigotry to divide us. For years, it has been clear where Trump’s consistent refusal to endorse the peaceful transfer of power could lead, and now has.”

“From Charlottesville to Pittsburgh to Poway to Gilroy to El Paso to the Capitol, we’ve seen this play out too many times. Last week’s attack on the Capitol was an attack on all of us. It wasn’t the first time Trump has incited his followers to violence, and it may not be the last unless we rise up to hold Trump and all of his enablers accountable. Every Republican responsible for fomenting these violent attacks on our elected officials and our democracy must resign or be removed, from the president on down.”

So far over 6,600 people have signed Bend the Arc: Jewish Action’s petition released last week calling for Trump’s impeachment, as well as the investigation and possible expulsion of the lawmakers who helped organize and incite the violent attacks. The research compiled on Bend the Arc’s How To Fight Antisemitism project details how several GOP lawmakers including Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Pete Sessions (R-TX), Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) and Mo Brooks (R-AL) either helped organize, spoke at, or promoted the rally that helped spark the violent attacks, and intentionally organized to undermine the election results and our democracy in the weeks leading up to the attack.

“We can make this a country of liberty and justice for all, but the first step is holding accountable those who betrayed our democracy,” said Cotler. “Now that we have won historic victories in Georgia electing the state’s first Black and Jewish U.S. senators, the new Senate majority can take bold action to make this country a true democracy, where the will of the people determines the actions of our leaders and where our government truly cares for all of us.”

Bend the Arc: Jewish Action is uniting a movement of tens of thousands of progressive Jews across the country who are fighting for justice and equality for all. We are the only national Jewish organization focused exclusively on social change in the United States.
