New York – Following the announcement that the Justice Department has appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller  as special counsel to oversee the investigation into connections between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, released the following statement:

“The appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel is an important and much-needed step forward in ensuring that the possible ties between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government are fully investigated. This is a significant victory for everyone who has been part of the resistance against Trump’s push toward autocracy.  Our movement demanded accountability, and this appointment makes clear to the American people that no public official, including the President, is above the law.

“We continue to call on Congress to appoint a nonpartisan, independent commission to conduct its own investigation.  In the last 24 hours, we have seen multiple reports that demonstrate that the Trump administration, his transition team, and the Republican leaders of Congress have each demonstrated shocking unwillingness to get to the bottom of Russia’s interference in our election. Only an independent commission, operating in an open and transparent way, can be trusted to examine and reveal the full truth about these attacks, who was involved in them, and their effect on our democracy.

Additionally, the Senate must insist that the next FBI director will maintain proper independence from the president, and not swear loyalty to him, but to the Constitution and the values Americans hold dear. All of these elements are essential to ensure the true justice and accountability Americans deserve from their government.”
