New York – Following the Senate's vote to confirm Neil Gorsuch, President Trump's pick for the Supreme Court, Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, released the following statement:

“The Senate has made a serious and deeply troubling error in changing its own rules in order to confirm a Supreme Court nominee as extreme as Neil Gorsuch. This vote, which is yet another example of the Republican willingness to undermine critical democratic institutions  in support of Donald Trump’s radical agenda, will mean new threats to workers’ rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights and the rights of all Americans.

“Our judicial system, designed to serve as a strong and independent check on the executive branch, will play a critical role in determining President Trump’s ability to implement his destructive, hateful policies. Just weeks into the Trump administration, we saw the importance of the courts in their repeated rulings against the president’s dangerous and unconstitutional Muslim and refugee ban. The confirmation of Neil Gorsuch is a threat to that independence and the functioning of our democracy.

“We are grateful to those in the Senate and around the country who stood up to oppose this nomination and worked to demonstrate the impact of the courts on the lives of everyday Americans. This fight has strengthened our resolve, and we will continue to resist the efforts of Trump and his Republican allies to impose Neil Gorsuch’s brand of judicial extremism upon our nation.”
