New York – Following reports of President Trump’s plans to form a commission chaired by Vice President Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach tasked with investigating voter suppression and alleged voter fraud, Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, released the following statement:

“We know from President Trump’s conspiratorial lies about illegal voting in the November election that his views on voting rights are deeply destructive and dangerous. His selection of Kris Kobach to lead this new voting commission is just the latest evidence of his warped worldview. In addition to his extensive ties to radical anti-immigrant and white nationalist organizations, Kobach has championed restrictive, needless voter suppression laws that disenfranchise low-income Americans, the elderly and people of color. He has also been a proponent of conspiracy theories about widespread voter fraud in the U.S., despite overwhelming evidence that it is virtually nonexistent.

“President Trump quite possibly owes his victory in November to voter suppression in key swing states, so it’s no surprise that he would ally himself with the likes of Kobach. His administration’s attacks on voting, like its assault on the free press, its targeting of religious minorities and immigrants, and the firing of officials overseeing investigations of his own campaign,  are part of an unmistakable and frightening trend toward autocracy and authoritarianism that Jews recognize all too well. We urge states across the country to resist Trump’s efforts to restrict voting by making it easier for their citizens to exercise their fundamental right to vote.”
