New York – Following President Trump’s release of his proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2018, Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, released the following statement:

"Trump promised to run the country like he ran his businesses. On that point this budget delivers:  it is built on liesmade-up numbers, and would swindle honest, working-class and poor Americans, while lining the pockets of the wealthy and powerful. To address it as serious public policy would be a farce. While it is thankfully unlikely to become law, it provides an instructive glimpse into Trump’s ideal society: ordinary people are treated with contempt; Medicaid, nutrition assistance, education, disability programs and support for veterans are eviscerated; while wealth and income are redistributed to his friends.

"Jewish tradition envisions a society where each person is treated with dignity, and the vulnerable are respected and given protection.  We urge Congress to forcefully reject President Trump’s dystopian vision for the federal budget and instead enact a budget that is based on fairness and compassion, and supports the working class, cares for the sick and elderly, values education and builds an economy where all can thrive."
