Defend Black Immigrants: Three powerful videos from immigrant justice experts

October 15, 2021

It’s the National Week of Action in Support of Black Migrants. At Bend the Arc, we learned so much by talking with three experts on Black immigrant justice — and we're excited to share short videos from each of them.

If you only have time for one video, make it this one. Peniel Ibe is the author of the viral piece “Immigration Is A Black Issue,” published this year during Black History Month. In this video, she tackles the anti-Blackness at the root of our immigration system and identifies how Black migrants are often excluded from progressive immigration policies.

So what does it look like to repair the harms of our immigration system? Breanne J. Palmer, Esq., shares a way to think about migration as a form of reparations.

The good news is there’s legislation moving right now that could help a lot of Black immigrants (and most Americans!). Haddy Gassama, Esq., at UndocuBlack explains why Congress needs to pass President Biden’s Build Back Better plan with a pathway to citizenship.

Thanks for joining us for the National Week of Action in Support of Black Migrants. While our current immigration system is built on anti-Blackness, there are incredible organizations doing work to dismantle it. UndocuBlack, Haitian Bridge Alliance, and Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) are some we think you should check out.

And you can sign up here to join Bend the Arc’s movement of progressive Jews and allies working for a country where all of us are safe and free.

In solidarity with Black migrants, today and every day,

The Bend the Arc team

These videos are from a Bend the Arc webinar called “Immigration, Race, and the Fight For Citizenship,” led by Graie Hagans, Bend the Arc’s Vision Praxis Director, on September 30, 2021.
