We are angry. We are deeply disappointed. The fact that 48 House Democrats voted to enable the Trump-MAGA anti-immigrant agenda this week — and that potentially dozens of Senate Democrats are on the cusp of joining them — is appalling. They should be ashamed.

The Laken Riley Act cynically manipulates a personal tragedy to harm countless immigrants. Soon, it will be law that any undocumented person who is merely accused of a minor crime will be thrown in detention. Even when we know that immigrants and people of color are more likely to be accused of crimes because of racism and racial profiling.

Trump’s campaign spread lies about immigrants to get elected and enact their authoritarian agenda, and now even Democratic members of Congress are buckling under political pressure to pass anti-immigrant policies.

But we know the truth — that attacking immigrants is not how we make our communities safer; that throwing immigrants in detention is not the answer to the problems we face.

Our movement will not back down. There is still time for Senate Democrats to hold the line. We know this is just the beginning; Republicans will keep moving their anti-immigrant agenda through Congress and every vote is a new opportunity to make Democrats do better. We will not stop fighting for a better, safer America that works for all of us.
