This is a moral crisis: National Call on Immigrant Justice

September 24, 2021

Our country is facing an ongoing moral crisis in how we treat immigrants — and we need your help to take action.

This week, we witnessed horrendous images of Customs and Border Protection officers violently abusing Haitian migrants in Del Rio, TX. At the same time, the Biden administration has ramped up expulsion flights of Haitians, forcibly deporting people who are exercising their legal right to seek asylum and continuing an ongoing pattern of targeting Black migrants.

We’ve seen this before. This type of violence against Black immigrants is part of a long legacy of anti-Black racism in our immigration system.

Our duty in this moment is to learn and to act together in moral courage. Join us for a special campaign call on Thursday, September 30 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT to learn from movement experts about how you can take action for immigrant justice.

On the call, you’ll hear from Black immigrant justice experts and movement leaders, including:

  • Haddy Gassama, Esq., Legislative Manager, We Are Home Campaign; Policy and Advocacy Director, UndocuBlack Network
  • Breanne J. Palmer, Esq., Interim Policy & Advocacy Director, UndocuBlack Network
  • Peniel Ibe, Policy Engagement Coordinator, American Friends Service Committee and co-chair of the Interfaith Immigration Coalition

The event will be hosted and moderated by Graie Hagans, Bend the Arc’s Vision Praxis Director.

Together, we’ll discuss how the U.S. immigration system has been shaped by white supremacy and anti-Blackness, how anti-Black racism shows up in multiracial immigrant rights work, and what people can do right now to secure a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants and build a more humane, anti-racist immigration system. Then, we’ll take action together right on the call.

RSVP to join Bend the Arc, our movement partners, and people across the country on Thursday, September 30 at 8 PM ET / 5PM PT.

Now is the time for action. This is a critical moment for Congress to hear a powerful wave of Jewish voices demanding a pathway to citizenship and an end to the inhumane deportations and detentions of migrants across the country.

Bend the Arc leaders have been working tirelessly on these priorities alongside our partners in the We Are Home and Defund Hate campaigns. Groups like UndocuBlack, Haitian Bridge Alliance, and Black Alliance for Just Immigration have been leading the way in centering Black immigrants and asylum seekers in this fight — and it’s our responsibility to support their work.

We elected President Biden and helped win Democratic majorities in the House and Senate for this moment. We won’t back down now.

Join us for an urgent campaign call on Thursday, September 30 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT to find out how you can take meaningful action for immigrant justice.

We can’t do this without you.

In community,

The Bend the Arc team
