Have you heard about the urgent hunger and labor strike by people in detention at Delaney Hall, a for-profit immigrant detention center in NJ?1
Protesters — family members, neighbors, faith leaders, and members of Congress — have been met with tear gas, threats, and violence. Proud Boys showed up to counter-protest. Those detained inside are experiencing retaliation and punishment for their bravery.2
Meanwhile, the Trump regime is demanding billions of more tax payer dollars for ICE to detain more immigrants in inhumane conditions. What we are witnessing at Delaney is not an exception within our detention system, it’s a spotlight on the inhumanity of the system itself.
Here are 3 ways you can support the action takers inside and out of Delaney right now —
- Raise your voice by emailing your members of Congress: Not one more dollar for ICE. GOP chaos had stalled the bill, but now it’s set to move forward in Congress this week.3 Our email tool is one way we can bring the voices of Delaney Hall strikers to Congress as we demand an end to funding ICE’s cruelty.
- Hear from organizers on the ground at Indivisible's "Delaney Hall & Beyond: Showing Up Strategically" call this Thursday, June 4, at 8pm ET, online.
- Read and share “Don’t Give Up: A Letter From Delaney Hall" released this week.
The detainees at Delaney Hall have said, “We feel vulnerable and, in a way, kidnapped—detained without justification—not to mention that we are being tortured physically and psychologically … our due process, rights, and defense have been violated … Families are being destroyed and separated.”
They are also clear in their demands: to close Delaney Hall and free everyone inside, starting with the elderly, children, and people with serious medical conditions.
As Jews and allies, we are called to action by these cries for justice: Email your Congressmember, join Thursday’s call, read and share the letter from Delaney Hall.
