We killed the bill that would let Trump shut down our nonprofits — for now. Read on for an update on H.R. 9495, and rush a gift to help us keep fighting. |
While H.R. 9495 just passed in the House, we helped create a groundswell of Democratic opposition — killing the bill’s chance of moving to the Senate!
I’m so proud of the work we did, but this is only the beginning of our fight to protect our social justice organizations and dissent under the incoming Trump administration.
In 2025, the GOP will try to pass this bill and others like it, but they’ll need Democratic support unless they change the Senate rules. Just like we did for H.R. 9495, we will need to act together to stop any Democrats from supporting the MAGA agenda.
Can you rush a gift of $10, $18, or any other amount to help us continue this work?
Here are some more details on what we did: Last week, we heard 150+ Democrats were prepared to vote “yes” on H.R. 9495. If that had happened, it’s likely the bill would have passed in the House and moved to the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer could bring it for a vote.
Instead: By the first vote on the bill, we got the number of Democrat yes votes down to 52. Then we made sure every one of those 52 Democrats heard from their constituents.
Today, our efforts paid off: only 15 Democrats voted in support of the bill (and we’ll make sure they hear from us again). We made that happen with hundreds of partners and our collective movements.
Looking forward: in January, Republicans will have a trifecta (control of both houses of Congress and the presidency), but their majorities will be slim — in part, thanks to our work in 33 House races this election.
Bend the Arc is ready to lead our Jewish movement, allies, and Democrats to block Trump’s agenda again, but we need your support. Donate now to make sure we have the resources to keep organizing powerfully in Trump’s second term.
Thank you for your support in this critical time,
