Nobody is above the law.

Nobody is above the law.

April 24, 2018

“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters, ok? It’s, like, incredible.”

Remember when Donald Trump said that during the campaign? Trump has always thought himself above the law. It’s why he’s threatening to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein1 — to disrupt the independent investigation into his campaign’s potential collusion with Russia and obstruction of justice.

But now, four Senators have introduced bipartisan legislation to protect Mueller’s job, his investigation, and the rule of law in our country. People across the country are calling their Senators TODAY, asking them to support this bill.

Can you make one call? Call your Senator now at 866-888-5744.<

Here’s a sample script you can use:

“Hi, my name is _____. I’m a member of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, and I’m calling to urge Senator _____ to support the bipartisan legislation to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller. This bill, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, is crucial to ensuring the independence of Mueller’s investigation and the safety of our democracy. As an American Jew, I hope the Senator will do everything possible to make sure this bill is passed.”

Trump firing Mueller or Rosenstein could send us into a constitutional crisis, but Trump has made it repeatedly clear that he thinks normal rules don’t apply to him.

This week, there’s a crucial vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee on this new legislation to protect Mueller. A “yes” vote would send a strong message to Trump that he is not above the law.

As Jews, we know all too well what this slide into authoritarianism can look like. We know that in this moment we need to protect our democracy. And we can help do that today by making one call.

Call your Senator now at 866-888-5744 and demand that they support legislation to protect Mueller’s investigation and the future of our democracy.

In solidarity,

Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block, Washington Director
