There are two landmark anniversaries coming up: Tomorrow is 35 years since the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law, and next week is the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare.
This extraordinary legislation — and the generations of organizers and activists who fought for them — show us how to defeat fascism’s attempts to divide us based on race, gender, age, immigration status, ability, and other identities.
As Jews fighting fascism today, we reject Trump’s budget bill shanda because it is a betrayal of our commitment to care for the most vulnerable. Next week, you’re invited to join “The Big Betrayal and How We Fight Forward,” a national gathering online co-sponsored by Bend the Arc to break down what’s in the budget bill, share stories from the frontlines, and lay the path forward.
As we enter Shabbat, we honor the activists and generations before us who made the ADA a reality and a model for policies that help everyone. And we honor the disability justice movement, which recognizes the links between all forms of oppression.
Disability justice is a key component of Jewish safety, and safety for us all.
We are proud to be a movement that includes, welcomes, centers, and celebrates all Jews with disabilities — from physical disabilities to neurodivergence and everything in between.
We build our movement so that all of us can be part of a new, liberated future together.
I hope you will join us online next week for The Big Betrayal and How We Fight Forward on Wednesday, July 30th, at 8pm ET — a national livestream event of meaning-making and movement-building to break down what’s in Trump's budget bill, who’s behind it, and how we fight forward.
Shabbat Shalom,
